Job Seekers Handbook for Overseas Employment

Prepared by: FIMCA – Federation of Indian Emigration Management Councils and Associations
Empowering Legal Migration, Ensuring Worker Welfare

INTRODUCTION

This handbook is a guide for Indian jobseekers aspiring to work abroad. It offers practical advice, legal safeguards, and ethical migration guidelines to help you make informed decisions, avoid exploitation, and pursue your overseas employment dream responsibly.

Before You Accept An Overseas Job – DOs

DO Verify the Recruitment Agency

1. Ensure the agency is licensed by the Ministry of External Affairs (Check on https://emigrate.gov.in)
2. Ask for the RA license number.

DO Insist on a Written Offer Letter

The offer should mention: Job title, salary, working hours, leave, benefits, accommodation, and food provisions.

DO Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Programme (PDOT)

It is mandatory and helps you understand the laws, rights, and cultural expectations of the destination country.

DO Keep Copies of All Documents

Passport, visa, employment contract, ID proofs, agency correspondence – keep copies with your family too.

DO Confirm PBBY Insurance and Emergency Contacts

Make sure your employer provides medical insurance and emergency assistance contacts.

DO Check Labour Laws of the Destination Country

Know your rights regarding working hours, overtime, leave, salary, and grievance redressal.

DON’Ts – Never Do This

DON’T Travel Without a Valid Work Visa

Tourist or visit visas are not valid for employment and may result in deportation or imprisonment.

DON’T Sign a Blank or Incomplete Contract

Insist on reviewing all employment terms in your language before signing.

DON’T Accept Job Changes After Arrival

Do not agree to a different job or salary than what was promised in writing.

DON’T Work Through Illegal Agents or Friends

Avoid unlicensed brokers or acquaintances offering jobs without proper documentation.

Practical Tips For Safe Migration

  • Use Government-Approved Channels Only
  • Save Helpline Numbers of Indian embassies in your destination country.
  • Never Carrying Illegal Substances – know the customs and drug laws of your host country.
  • Stay Connected – update your family regularly about your location and work.
  • Report Exploitation – to Indian missions or via eMigrate Grievance.
